Profile
The Utkal University of Culture, the first of its type in India, was incorporated under the Ordinance promulgated by the Governor of Orissa on the 9th June, 1999 and subsequently by an Act passed by the Orissa Legislative Assembly and published in the Orissa State Gazette on the 12th August, 1999. The University has been duly recognised by the University Grants Commission on 1st December, 1999, under section 2(f) of the U.G.C Act, 1995. It has been granted membership by the Association of Indian Universities with effect from 1.4.2000.
Objectives
The university shall have the following objectives namely:
- To promote education, research and training in various spheres of culture including language, literature, visual arts, performing arts, architecture, folklore and tribal studies etc.
- To explore, document, preserve and propagate the rich national heritage through such devices as establishing libraries, archives, galleries and initiating programmes of publication etc. and conducting comprehensive surveys of all matters related to culture;
- To generate and disseminate learning and promote creative excellence in various spheres of culture, providing the infrastructure for instruction, research and creativity and, in particular, to take appropriate measures for promoting inter-disciplinary academic and creative pursuits in the university;
- To promote ethnic studies, like ethnoarchaeology and ethnomusicology etc. and to promote such studies that bear upon the living conditions of communities in the past and at present;
- To provide facilities and opportunities for graduate, post-graduate, doctorate and post-doctorate education in various spheres of culture including language, literature, visual arts, performing arts architecture, folklore and tribal studies etc. by instruction, training, research, as well as through development and extension work and by such other means as the university may deem fit;
- To serve as a Centre for fostering cooperation and exchange of ideas among the academic and research communications;
- To organise exchange programmes with other institutions of repute in India and abroad; and
- To undertake such other activities as may be required to fulfill the above subjects.
